There are many questions that both the professionals who choose to graduate as Master of companies such as Quality Management and Productivity, with which I am intertwined, like many companies in the year as a consultant and advisor, how to optimize the contributions benchmarking that generates, and its scope and impact.

Precisely because of these concerns and to promote the importance of benchmarking, this article was written, hoping that some form of answers to his current role

We will be as simple in its development and for this recall, that was started by the early ’80s, when managers of companies, especially Xerox, began looking at business from a systemic point of view, namely as a series activities and transactions that have as main objective the satisfaction of the customer, through measurement and comparison processes can be improved constantly.

It is used to measure the performance of a system or component of a system, often in comparison with which specifically refers to the action of running a benchmark. The benchmark is an anglicized word translatable into Castilian as comparative. Although this word can also be found by referring to the original meaning in the Anglo-Saxon language, is in the computer field where its use is more widespread.

More formally be understood that one benchmark is the result of the implementation of a computer program or set of programs on a machine, with the aim of estimating the performance of a particular element or all of it, and to compare the results with similar machines.
“A systematic and continuous process to evaluate products, services and work processes of organizations that are recognized as representing best practices in order to make organizational improvements”

This process can result in significant benefits for the organization, allowing:

• Meet in a more efficient consumer needs.
• Increase the level of competitiveness.
• Define the goals and strategies according to actual conditions in the environment.
• Increase the participation of workers, through the generation of ideas for application in different processes and activities within the company.

Because Benchmarking applications are endless, it is necessary for organizations to establish guidelines to determine which function or process is considered as part of programs to be developed by them.

It is for this reason that the most important steps can be summarized in the following points:

1. In the first, you must plan ahead. Division directors should start by choosing the processes that wish to improve (for example, the distribution system), select the company that stand out more about it (distribution) and decide how to measure differences between the two processes.
2. Then! Is the stage, which measures the process of others and then himself (adaptation).
3. The next step is to compare, in the example of the two distribution systems, looking for details that is more efficient. Then try to find facilitators, tools, policies or work practices that lead to superior quality
4. Finally, comes the action stage. Managers adapt, and in some cases improve, the processes of social observed.
